Remote Desktop - How to Access Remote Devices

Summary

Before connecting to a remote computer on campus, you must first establish a VPN connection if you are working remotely. Instructions for connecting to KU Anywhere VPN can be found in the related articles panel.

You will also need to have the computer name and location; if you don't have this information, you will need to contact your departmental support staff.

  1. Connect to KU Anywhere on your computer.

  2. Open the Remote Desktop Connection (RDP) program. The easiest way to find this program is to open the Start Menu and type Remote to pull it up.
Clicking the Start button, typing Remote Desktop Connection, then selecting its entry in the list.

  3. Enter your computer name in the Computer text box.

  4. Enter your user name in the format "home\\onlineID" in the User Name field.
Entering the computer's name as name.home.ku.edu in the Computer field, your username as home\online ID, then clicking Connect.

  5. Click Connect.

  6. When prompted, enter your KU password in the security pop-up field.
Entering your KU ID password in the prompt and clicking OK.

Once connected via Remote Desktop Connection (RDP), you will have full access to the remote computer's desktop and can interact with it as if you were physically present at the machine.
