Summary
Globus is the University of Kansas's secure file transfer protocol (FTP) solution and integrates with KU's Research File Storage (ResFS) and other storage platforms.
Collaborators not affiliated with University of Kansas should follow the instructions below for one-time account set up, installation of the Globus client on a workstation, and data retrieval using Globus.

Prerequisites

File Share Access Rights.

If your institution is affiliated with Globus, send your Globus affiliated email address to the KU faculty or staff member you are collaborating with.

If your institution is not affiliated with Globus, send your Globus ID email (example@globusid.org) to the KU faculty or staff member you are collaborating with after you setup your new account in section "1. Set Up - Globus Account for External to KU Collaborator" step 2b below.
1. Set Up - Globus Account for External to KU Collaborator
To set up a Globus account, you can either log in with a institutional account associated with Globus or set up a new Globus ID account. Once your account is created, you will then be taken to the File Manager where you can transfer files.

Open a web browser and navigate to: https://globus.org, then click: LOG IN in the top right of the screen.

Depending upon whether you belong to a institution that participates with Globus or not, perform either below:

If your institution is associated with Globus, click within the Look-up your organization… field, select your university, and click: Continue. Proceed to log in with your university credentials and continue to Step 3 below. Otherwise, move to the next step.

If you do not belong to a participating institution, click: Globus ID to sign in in the bottom-middle of the screen.

Click: Need a Globus ID? Sign Up.

Create a username (suggestion: use the first part of your work email before the @ symbol), create a strong password of at least 10-characters with at least one capital, number, and special character, enter your name and work email, and indicate whether you work in non-profit or the commercial sector. When finished, click: Create ID.

Check your e-mail and enter the code you received from Globus into the Verification Code box. Click: Verify.

After verifying your email address you will be logged in. Click: Continue.

Click: Continue to complete your sign up.

Click: Allow to proceed.

You will be directed to the File Manager page. This is the location where you can transfer files to and from the collections you have access to, such as your computer, KU servers, etc.

2. Set Up - Globus Connect Personal Client
To receive files, you must install the Globus Client on your computer. If you wish to optionally share files, you must to create a file storage location on your computer, which is called a collection.
Install Client on Your Computer

Navigate to: https://app.globus.org.

When Globus Online opens, click: Collections on the left side of the screen.

Click: Get Globus Connect Personal in the top right.

Click: Download Globus Connect Personal for...

-
Once the download completes, run the globusconnectpersonal installer from your downloads folder, then click: Install.

Follow all default installer prompts and click: Install.

In the Completing Globus Connect Personal Setup window, esure Run Globus Connect Personal is checked and click: Finish.

A new Globus Connect Personal Setup will open, click: Log In.

Enter a name for this computer, then click: Allow.

Give the new collection a name and click: Save.

Example collection name: Lab Files, Instrument Data, etc.

This is the name of your client endpoint collection.
-
If your data contains PHI or controlled unclassified information, check the High Assurance check box.

Click: Exit Setup.

The Globus Endpoint client is now installed on your computer. When using Globus Online at https://app.globus.org your computer will show as a location to copy files to and from. If you would like to adjust the location where files will be saved on your computer, and change it from the default Documents folder, follow the steps below.
Create Custom File Storage Location on Your Computer (Optional)
By default, Globus selects your Documents folder as the location it will save and copy files. You can change this location to another of your choice by performing the following:

Right-click on the Globus icon in the bottom right of your screen.

Click: Options...

If you wish to remove the default Documents location, Click: c:\Users\... to highlight it, then click the minus (-) button in the bottom-right to remove it from the list.

To add a new location, click the plus (+) button in the bottom-right of the window.

Click the new folder icon in the top-right of the screen, name the folder to match the collection name you created above (example: Lab Files, Instrument Data, etc.). Click the folder you just created and click: Choose.

The Writable option is selected by default to allow files to be copied to your folder. Click Save to apply changes and exit.

You are now ready to copy data to and from your computer. If you checked the Shareable box, then others are allowed to copy files from your folder to their device. If you have any questions, please reach out to your KU collaborator and they will be able to put you in touch with IT support as needed.
3. Retrieve Data Shared with You
In order to retrieve files, you must log into the Globus File Manager, access them there, and download them to your Globus Client Endpoint.

Log in to Globus File Manager by visiting: https://app.globus.org, or right-click the Globus system tray icon and select: Web: Transfer Files.

Click the two-pane icon in the top-right of the screen.

Click: Collections on the left side of the screen, click: Shared With You, then click the right-facing arrow to the right of the collection you wish to access.

Click: Open in File Manager to access the shared collection's files.

To download files, click the checkbox next to the file you wish to download, then click: Transfer or Sync to… and enter your computer's collection name into the Collection field, then click the Start button on the left-hand side of the screen to begin the file transfer.

The files you transferred will now be in the Documents folder on your computer, or the folder you created and set during the create custom file storage location on your computer as part of the "2. Set Up - Globus Client on Your Computer" section.
You have completed the necessary steps to use copy files shared with you from collaborators at KU. If you have any questions, please reach out to your KU collaborator and they will be able to put you in touch with IT support as needed.
4. Upload Data to KU Collaborator
In order to share files, you must log in to Globus File Manager, choose the collaborator's collection where you will upload files, then transfer your files to their collection.

The files you wish to share must be stored within the client endpoint file location you set up in section "2. Set Up - Globus Client on Your Computer" above.

Once files are in a location accessible by the Globus Client Endpoint, log in to Globus File Manager by visiting https://app.globus.org or right-click the Globus system tray icon and select Web: Transfer Files.

Click the two-pane icon in the top-right of the screen.

Click: Collections on the left side of the screen, click: Shared With You, then click the right-facing arrow to the right of the collection you wish to access.

Click: Open in File Manager to access the shared collection's files.

Type the name of your client endpoint collection in the Collection search bar on the right side of the screen. Click the checkbox next to the file(s) you wish to upload, then click the Start button on the right side of the screen to begin the file transfer.

After you click Start a notice will appear in the top right of the screen where you can click View details > to see the status of your transfer task.

You have now completed the necessary steps to share files with collaborators at KU. If you have any questions, please reach out to your KU collaborator and they will be able to put you in touch with IT support as needed.
