Personal Devices - KU Services on Phones, Laptops, and Desktops

User's configuration data is stored in the PRAM/NVRAM when they use macOS — this includes wireless configuration information, which may cause issues when connecting to the Jayhawk network. Per Apple documentation:

• NVRAM (nonvolatile random-access memory) is a small amount of memory that your Mac uses to store certain settings and access them quickly. PRAM (Parameter RAM) stores similar information, and the steps for resetting NVRAM and PRAM are the same.

If you're unable to sign into the Jayhawk network, have confirmed that your online ID and password are working for other services, and restarting the computer does not resolve the issue, KU IT recommends resetting your PRAM as the next troubleshooting step. You may need to set up other networks and system preferences as well after a PRAM reset, but your files will not be impacted by this process.

1. Shut down the computer. For this process, choosing "Restart" will not work.
   

2. Press the power button on your Mac to turn it on; you'll want to proceed to Step 4 immediately.

3. Hold down Cmd + Option + P + R on the Mac keyboard.
   

4. Wait and continue to hold down the keys while macOS boots; the computer may appear to restart. Apple recommends holding the buttons down for 20 seconds, but if your Mac plays a sound at start-up, you can release these keys after it plays the start-up sound a second time.

Once you release the keys, macOS should continue with starting up. Once you're able to log in, try connecting to the Jayhawk network again.

KU IT does not manage or store personal bit locker keys. However, they may occasionally be tied to your Microsoft account with your KU email. These instructions will help a user find their personal bit locker codes. In the event your code is not found the operating system may need to be reinstalled thus resulting in possible data loss.

1. Open a web browser on another device. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey to find your recovery key.

2. Complete the sign in process with your personal Microsoft account.

   • A KU email address may be setup as a personal account. If you do not see this screen below. Then you do not have a personal account tied to your KU email. You may have setup a personal Microsoft account with a different email address.
     

3. If bit locker recovery key is present. You will see something similar to what is below. If no keys are shown or they are incorrect. Please proceed to the next step.
   

4. Now go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com/device-list.

5. Complete the sign in process with your KU Online ID.

6. You should be taken to your device list. You can expand any device to expose "Bit Locker" keys.
   

If the key cannot be found at either of these links, we are unable to offer any further support since it is a personal device. You may have:

• A printout: You may have printed your recovery key when BitLocker was activated. Look where you keep important papers related to your computer.

• On a USB flash drive: Plug the USB flash drive into your locked PC and follow the instructions. If you saved the key as a text file on the flash drive, use a different computer to read the text file.
