Managed Devices - KU Laptops and Desktop Workstations

Summary

Users will find a list of common issues that may affect how a KU managed device operates at both the Lawrence & Edwards campus. Students using public lab computers found on the main Lawrence campus can install software by following the instructions for "Software Installation."

Account Disabled & Domain Unavailable

Users who receive either message below:

saying "Account has been disabled."
Domain isn't available.

Please contact the IT Help desk to open a support ticket to investigate this issue.

Common Issues After Changing Password

It is common for users to find that they've either:

Lost access to Central File Storage (CFS), Research File Storage (RFS).
Unable to login to workstation with new password but old password still works.

After changing their password. Typically this only affects users who are working remotely. Please go through the steps outlined below.

Mac

Log in to the workstation using the prior password.
Connect to the VPN to set up communication between the computer and the KU network.

Lock your computer with the computer connected to the VPN. One way to do this is to press keys on your keyboard. The other is to open the Apple menu, and select "Lock Screen."

If you are not successful in following these steps these are the alternative solutions.

Laptop - Take said device with a charged battery to campus. When you are within range of the network. Turn your laptop on and log in with your new password.
Desktop - Call 785-864-8080 a ticket will be created and escalated to your technical support team.

Windows

Log in to the workstation using the prior password.
Connect to the VPN to set up communication between the computer and the KU network.

Lock your computer with the computer connected to the VPN. One way to do this is to press the Windows key and the "L" key on your keyboard. The other is to open the Start menu, click your account icon, and select "Lock."

Press "Ctrl + Alt + Del" to log in to the computer. The computer will now use the new password from this point forward.

If you are not successful in following these steps these are the alternative solutions.

Local Logon Disabled

KU IT automatically disabled any device that has not checked in for a period of 210 days. The IT help desk will need to open a support ticket and assign it to your technical support team for resolution. The image below may contain outdated verbiage and is simply shown as a sample image. This computer has not been able to communicate with the KU network for an extended period of time. For security reasons access to this computer has been restricted. Your technical support team has the, resources to fix this issue. You may be able to find your technical support team at https://tsc.ku.edu. , Alternatively, you can contact the IT Customer Service Center at 785-864-8080 or itcsc@ku.edu who, can reach out to your technical support team on your behalf.

Software Installation

KU managed devices typically require administrator access to install software. Select your operating system below.

macOS

Open the Self Service application (also called the Software Center) on your Mac. If you open Launchpad, you'll see it denoted with a Jayhawk icon.
Locate the software you are wanting to install. It may be present on the front page, but you can also search the Self Service application or select a category under "Browse" on the left sidebar.
Click "Install." You will see a loading icon while the application installs. When the installation is complete, the Self Service application will say "Finished," which will then change to a button marked "Reinstall."
Open your software either via the Launchpad, Spotlight Search, or the Applications folder.

Windows OS

Click the Start button and find the Software Center in the start menu list of applications. Alternatively, you can type "Software Center" in the search box at the top.
In the KU Software Center, search for the software you want to install. Click on it's Icon.
Click Install.
