APPLIES TO:

CAMPUS:

POLICY STATEMENT:
Overview
In accordance with Board of Regents requirements, Article 7, section 4 of the Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations, and the University Policy on Post-tenure Review, the School of Music has adopted these expectations and procedures for conducting post-tenure review. Post-tenure review is a process for periodic peer evaluation of faculty performance that provides an opportunity for a long-term assessment of a faculty member’s accomplishments and future directions in the areas of teaching, scholarship, and service.
Post-tenure review must be conducted in a manner that respects the rights of faculty members involved, including academic freedom, tenure, and due process. In addition, all those involved in the evaluation process must recognize that it is a confidential personnel matter and take appropriate steps to protect confidentiality.
Period for Review:
Post-tenure review is conducted on a seven-year cycle and covers the seven-year period leading up to the review, including the six prior annual evaluation letters and activities since the last annual evaluation. The cycle is restarted if a faculty member is evaluated for promotion or is awarded a distinguished professorship. Some years may be excluded from the period in accordance with the University policy and the review may be postponed if the faculty member is on leave during the year of review. The Dean's Office will notify faculty members scheduled for post-tenure review no later than March 15 in the spring semester preceding the academic year of review.
Standards for Acceptable Performance
- The faculty member must be teaching an appropriate load, according to the faculty member’s allocation of effort, the Faculty Teaching Load Policy, and the Faculty Evaluation Policy.
- The faculty member must be doing research/creative work that advances them toward a national and/or international reputation, according to disciplinary expectations. This work may take any of the forms listed in the section of the Faculty Evaluation Policy relevant to the faculty member’s area.
- The faculty member must be doing an appropriate level of service for their allocation of effort
Review Committee
Post-tenure review is conducted by the Promotion and Tenure Committee. The committee must note that all recommendations concerning Post-Tenure Reviews shall be made solely in accordance with the standards in the Faculty Senate Rules and Regulations and in the School of Music Faculty Evaluation Policy. The Committees’ deliberations and recommendations must be treated as confidential personnel matters.
If a member of either committee has a clear conflict of interest that would compromise their impartiality in the evaluation of one or more candidates, that committee member should recuse themself from the evaluation of that candidate. The candidate may request in writing that a member of the committee be removed because of a conflict of interest. The candidate should clearly state why they believe that a conflict of interest exists. The Department Chair and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs will decide if such a conflict exists and, if so, appoint another member to the committee. If the candidate disagrees with the decision, the matter will be resolved by a majority vote of the committee. In the event of a tie, the decision will be made by the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs.
Review Procedure
The School of Music Post-Tenure Review Procedure follows the steps required by the University’s Post-tenure Review policy. This includes the post-tenure review file, procedures for the committee’s review and report, review by the Department Chair, the Dean’s review, appeals process, and report to the Provost.
